THE FAITH WAY
NEWS AND EVENTS
Dear Friends,
We continue our celebration of 'Beloved Traditions and New Beginnings.' We have another 'newcomers' gathering on Friday, October 3. My hope for the Newcomer group is that we will have quarterly parties for people along with a quarterly series of introductory classes to help people learn about Holy Faith. Currently we have twenty people in our Sunday newcomer`s class. We will have a 'Welcome Weekend' for all people interested in confirmation in the Episcopal Church on Friday, October 17, from 7:00-9:00pm and Saturday, October 18 from 9:00am-3:00pm. Bishop Frey, the Assisting Bishop of the Rio Grande, will be with us on Sunday, October 26, to confirm and receive those who have attended the Welcome Weekend. Please call the office to reserve a place for the weekend or give me a call if you have questions about confirmation. We will provide refreshments on Friday and lunch on Saturday.
As a prelude to our Stewardship Campaign this year, we will be hosting special 'zip code socials' in the late afternoon on October 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23. If you do not receive an invitation by October 10, please call the office (982.4447). The clergy and parish leaders will be present at each of these socials to speak about our hopes and programs and to listen to your concerns. It will be a good time to meet in smaller groups with parish leadership.
Bishop William Frey, once rector of Trinity on the Hill in Los Alamos, former bishop of Guatemala, retired bishop of Colorado, and assisting bishop of the Rio Grande will be with us on Sunday, October 26 to confirm, receive, celebrate, and preach. He will also speak at the Forum that day. My hope is that we will all have an opportunity to welcome him and his wife, Barbara, to Holy Faith.
I hope you are able to be in Church every Sunday. If you are not able to attend, we can bring the sacrament to you. Please call one of the clergy to arrange for us to come to you. With every blessing and love in Christ, I am, yours faithfully,
Kenneth J.G. Semon *****

ART AND SOUL -- Art and Soul Set for June 5, 2009
Fundraiser for Faith at Work Needs Angels
Imagine being alone with two small children, broke and homeless after ending a marriage to an abusive man. She turned to you through Faith at Work (FAW) for help. Now she is living in low income housing; FAW paid the security deposit, furnished the home, clothed the family and provided a car when hers died. FAW encouraged her to go to school again. She started at SF Community College and recently completed her first semester at Northern New Mexico College. 'I am going to college to try to get out of poverty.'
Each year, generous parishioners direct dollars and thousands of volunteer hours toward helping Santa Fe`s neediest secure necessities: food, clothing, financial help, and services. FAW provides direct assistance, individualized case management, and the expertise to tap into a network of more than 80 social service programs. The goal of FAW is to provide the tools, skills, and resources to make a person successful and self-sufficient.
What is Art and Soul ? Art and Soul is the primary fundraising event for FAW. In 2006 the event raised $142,000, with 100 percent of auction proceeds going to Santa Fe`s needy.
The 2009 Art and Soul will feature honored artists, and both silent and live auctions brimming with glorious art, jewelry, travel packages, and dinners at Santa Fe restaurants. Additionally, refreshments and entertainment will be part of the gala, which will again be held at The Church of the Holy Faith from 6:00 pm until 9:30 pm on June 5, 2009.
What`s the 2009 Goal? The goal is to raise $125,000. In 2008 FAW will help 600-675 households and other agencies clients with $300,000+ in aid (financial, food, and goods).
Wanted: Angels with Art, Heart, and Soul We need angels, and fast! What kind? Right now the focus is on the Live Auction!
The 2006 Art and Soul Live Auction raised $70,000: 15 art & 9 travel auction items.

Silent Auction Donations: Hold for delivery until January. THANKS FOR BEING AN ANGEL! *****
PROPERTY NOTES
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED ON SEPTEMBER 13 AND 14! The Fall Kick Off Sunday would not have been such a success without you. It could not have happened without your picking weeds, sweeping the parking lot, trimming trees, setting up chairs and tables, preparing the Sunday School rooms, preparing the food, directing the traffic, cleaning up afterwards, and etc. Thank you.
Many people asked about the cross that was used for the outdoor service. It normally hangs in the back stairway of Conkey House. It is labeled on the back R. Milagrito with a number of 200-332. The R is written backwards. And that is all we know about it. If you would have any information about this cross or would like to help as an 'art detective,' please contact Bill or Scott.
Part of the current inventory of assets that we are conducting is to note the artwork that the church owns. If you have an interest in helping us learn more about the art, including the stain glass windows, please contact Bill or Scott. Or maybe you have knowledge of someone that can help us get professional appraisals of the art, or maybe someone in the field of art preservation? We already know of several pieces of art that need repair.
In October staff and Vestry members will be meeting with the church`s insurance representative to conduct a risk management survey and review the coverage we currently have. Part of the preparation for this meeting is to have an inventory of what we own.
Obviously security of property and people will be a part of the risk management audit. Currently we are trying to locate three large colored tubs that have the owners name and phone number on the bottom. They were in the Palen kitchen. Maybe you loaded something in the tubs to take home and forgot to bring them back?
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, November 29, for the next project day. We will be hanging garland and wreaths as we prepare the church and fellowship hall for Advent. All ages and skill levels are welcome to come and enjoy the festival occasion. *****
UNITED THANK OFFERING-- The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of the Episcopal Church providing funds for the work of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. The UTO funds programs like:
Kitchen equipment for a homeless shelter A playground for a child-care center Handicap access in church and service buildings A school in the Dominican Republic A dental clinic for the poor A library for a seminary in Africa
UTO boxes are available in the back of the church. Please take one and give generously. The UTO Ingathering will take place November 9. _____________________________

Come Join In All The Fun -- A Costume/Halloween Partyfor ALL AGES
Friday, October 31 from 6 - 8 p.m. in Palen Hall.
There will be food, costume contests, games, activities for everyone, and, of course, CANDY. This will be a safe environment for families to celebrate 'All Hallows` Eve.' Invite your friends, family and neighbors.
If you would like to help with decorating, food, leading some of the games or activities, or just have questions about the evening please give Janet McCroskey, Interim Youth Coordinator, a call at 505.864.3164 or e-mail at janetmc1@airmail.net. We want to have 'happy' ghosts, pumpkins and goblins and try to stay away from the 'scary' stuff.
We will have a story time with the story of 'God`s Night.' Then many people do not know that in the Episcopal Church there is an evening service for All Hallows` Eve, so this year we will end our evening together as a church family with this service.
A Background Reflection for All Hallows` Eve: Saints (those who are 'hallowed,' made holy) are those men and women who have faithfully lived the Good News. Today we remember that each of us is also called to be a saint and we remember that Jesus told us to 'be glad because your names are written in heaven' (Luke10:20).
Legends show that Halloween may have come from the Roman Feralia, during which prayers were offered for all deceased relatives, friends, and heroes. We consider saints, holy men and women, to be heroes, too.
Before the Romans invaded Britain and brought their celebration of Feralia, the Druids of Britain celebrated Samhain, Summer`s End, on October 31. The Druids believed that on this day the spirits of dead people who had not lived good lives would be forced to enter the bodies of animals. Thus the ghostly qualities of Halloween arise from both Roman and Druid customs.
In Wales, people celebrated Halloween by telling fortunes, particularly those of young girls and boys. The next day people paraded from door to door singing and asking for a soul cake in return for prayers. They felt that keeping a soul cake in the home all year brought good fortune.
Soul, soul, for a souling cake I pray, good missus, a souling cake One for Peter, two for Paul And three for him who made us all.
Long ago in Scotland, children made jack-o-lanterns out of turnips. They lit and carried them to protect themselves against witches, fairies, elves, and goblins. In some parts of England, people gathered around the fire to tell stories and roast nuts. The Irish probably initiated the custom of 'trick or treat' when groups of Irish farmers went from house to house soliciting food. The farmers promised prosperity to those who gave abundantly and made threats against those who didn`t. This Irish custom is similar to the Welsh 'souling.'
There is a new way of trick or treating in many countries. Instead of collecting goodies for themselves, many children say, 'Trick or treat for UNICEF.' The United Nations then uses the collected money to help sick and hungry children around the world.
The prayer service for Halloween helps children rediscover a religious meaning in this holiday.
In celebrating this eve, we recognize our call to be holy. In recognizing ourselves as the family of God, we accept in love our responsibility to pray for all people—those living, those who have died, and those who are yet to live. *****

FOREIGN MISSIONS
NEWS FROM INDIA The following letter was emailed to our Foreign Missions team. It is from one of the boys in the Jaipur Children`s Aid home.
Dear Uncle and Aunty,
Greetings to you in the name of Christ. this is Anil here. Hope you all remember me. We all are fine here by God`s grace. During July our school reopened and after a vacation of more than a month we went to school. We all were quite excited about it with our new school bags, uniforms, shoes and everything new. During vacations we had a great time this year. It had rained many times after the mid of June. We enjoyed the rain very much. We were in fact dancing in the rain with all support from Bittu Dedi. She is always there with us to support us in all fun. She used to be with us in helping us doing the assignments and homeworks. She is the one who does all the difficult home assignments and projects for all of us and even for Alexander Bhaiya.
So when school reopened we all were appreciated by our teachers for our prompt work and all. Then we celebrated Raksha Bandhan. Rakhi was tied for all us by Bittu Dedi. We celebrated the festival very much. I got prizes for singing for the Independence Day function. Not only me. Almost everyone from JCA got prizes. then from next month our exams will start. The elder ones are busy preparing for that.
I have a special request for you. We all are quite anxious to see you all, so when you reply to my mail, let me know when you all are coming to see us.
Thanking you, yours lovingly, Anil *****
We have recently heard from Mr Baby, the on site Christian director of Jaipur Children`s Aid, that he would prefer to receive money rather than have presents shipped for Christmas gifts for 'our JCA kids.' If some of you have purchased things for the box which is being organized with Betty Carley`s leadership, that`s fine. We`ll send what we have. If others of you want to make a happier Christmas for the boys, please make out your check in any amount to the Church of the Holy Faith but it is important that you put JCA Christmas in the memo line. Checks could be left in the Foreign Missions box in Amy`s office or given directly to Betty. The Foreign Missions Committee wants to thank you for your generosity which has promise to make this the best Christmas ever for JCA. The Foreign Missions Comm. ___________________________________
FAITH AT WORK COMMUNITY OUTREACH
It`s been a very busy fall at Faith at Work. Our Back to School program was supplemented this year by contributions to KOAT Channel 7/Smith Grocers. We had school supplies and school uniforms all over our space. We have provided school supplies to 130 children and continue to receive requests. Your generosity is greatly appreciated by these children and their parents. They are starting the new school year well equipped!
Are any of you collecting the Albertson`s coupons when you shop? We have received donations of several of the dish sets for our families. You may find this a meaningful way to lend support to those in need who are becoming settled in their households. With the fall chill in the air, the requests for blankets and sleeping bags for homeless people will increase. We continue to receive requests for food items for the homeless and for those moving from homeless status to set up housekeeping. These contributions, in addition to household items, clothing, and financial contributions are always appreciated and put to good use.
Food items needed include: pasta, spaghetti sauces, instant coffee and oatmeal, canned fruits and vegetables, flour, sugar, syrup and jams and jellies. We can also use 'gift cards' with which to purchase fresh milk and eggs.
We are quite proud of our almost 25 volunteers who make significant contributions of their time and talents to match your donations to those who can use them. We are seeking an additional 4-5 volunteers to work in our facility. We would invite someone to come in for 2-3 hours twice monthly to keep our shoes sorted and organized. With one of our volunteers off to spend the winter in warmer temperatures we also invite someone to volunteer on Tuesdays to fill the weekly supply requests from Healthcare for the Homeless and the Youth Shelters, and encourage someone to join us as much as three hours a week to sort baby and children`s clothing and help to keep it organized. Call me at 471-6323 if you are interested or can recommend someone who might be so.
Again we thank you for your incredible generosity. We are able to assist a good number of people, directly and jointly with other agencies, in large part through your generous spirit of giving.
Angela Merkert, Executive Director _______________________________
